The 38th National Arm Wrestling Championship concluded Wednesday here at auditorium of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Geyzing. The two days event was organized by All Sikkim Arm Wrestling Association (ASAWA) under the aegis of Arm Wrestling Federation of India (AWFI).
The final day of the event was graced by political advisor to chief minister of Sikkim T.N Dhakal as chief guest. D.C (West) Karma R. Bonpo, president (AWFI) Ar. PrahladBhagawati, vice president Ganesh Subba, president (ASAWA) LhendupDorjee Bhutia, match officials and others were also present at the event.
The final matches under various category of the championship were played. The state of Assam riding on stellar and all round performances in both men and women categories bagged the champion of champion trophy. Manipur and Kerala finished in second and third places respectively. The participants from Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also gave their best and walked away with few gold, silver and bronze medals but they failed to make it to the top three. The team Sikkim, displaying a dismal performances finished as the lowest ranking team in the championship.
T.N Dhakal in his brief address hailed the initiative taken by ASAWA for promotion of arm wrestling in the state. He said that arm wrestling is an amazing game and the game could be introduced in the day to day curriculum activity of schools so that students get a platform for necessary physical exercise. “I appreciate the effort of ASAWA for introducing arm wrestling in Sikkim. It is an amazing game but the game needs to be promoted and popularized in the state as it is new and in nascent stage”, he said.
He maintained that the state government would give importance for development of all kinds of sporting activities in the state. Saying that sports could be a means of livelihood and employment opportunities for the younger generation, Dhakal pitched for the greater need of development of sporting culture. Sporting activities help the people to remain mentally sound and physically strong thus making way for creation of a better society, Dhakal added.
Ganesh Subba thanked the entire members of organizing committee, match officials and others for their contributions towards successful management of the championship. He maintained that even though the weather condition was not so suitable the championship was successful due to effort put up by each and every individuals involved with management of the championship. “I am thankful to all who helped us to organize the national arm wrestling championship in a successful and progressive way”, he said.
Adding that the championship was beneficial for the sikkimese arm wrestlers, Subba mentioned that the championship helped them gain lot of experience and knowledge about arm wrestling. He expressed that the sikkimese arm wrestlers would perform better in the upcoming championships.
Medals, trophies and certificates were handed over to the winning and runners up participants of the championship.
The football players Bikash Jairu and Robin Gurung, national boxer Bhavya Gurung, national Karatey player Tshering Yankey Bhutia and other prominent personalities from different fields of society were felicitated by the organizing committee.
