The first ever launch programme of Child Friendly GPU at 46 Barfung Jarrong GPU, one of the identified pilot GPUs of South District was held at the auditorium of Chandraman Rai Secondary School, Jarrong today. The first of its kind initiative in the whole of Sikkim is an innovative initiative of the District Child Protection Unit (South) under ICPS,SJE&WD. The initiative has been taken up with an objective of establishing child protection mechanism at the grassroot level in order to promote a child friendly environment and community which in turn would be instrumental in turning the entire state into a Child Friendly State. The Child friendly GPU would entail series of activities and programmes to educate and sensitize the communities about child rights and child protection issues. It will also help build a platform to empower and engage the children in the decision making process through Bal Panchayats and Bal Sabhas through which children can voice out their opinions, raise issues concerning them, build human resources of the community by identifying community volunteers and building their capacities in subjects like child counseling, child rights, legislations related to children so that they can provide emergency relief and rehabilitation services to the children in difficult circumstances. The formation of such an establishment will also facilitate convergence of different departments to bring child related programmes and services under one roof and make them accessible to children of the community. It may be mentioned that two more GPUs have been identified in South District by District Child Protection Unit (South) ICPS,SJE&WD.
Speaking on the launch programme, DCPO (South) Roshnila Gurung who has conceptualized the initiative of Child Friendly GPU stated that, considering the rising crimes and abuses against children which is growing in number and nature in Sikkim, she felt the urgent need to address, aware and sensitize the communities to address such jarring and significant issues. She also made the gathering aware that today Sikkim stands as the third highest north-eastern state with crimes against children after Assam and Mizoram as per the NCRB report. She further stated that through the creation and establishment of a child friendly GPU, a strong support system within the community for reporting of cases, providing emergency assistance, medical, financial, legal, psychological and rehabilitation help is possible. She strongly expressed and emphasized that by empowering and engaging the children by providing them a platform where they can voice out their opinions, solutions to the various problems that concerns them can be facilitated through Bal panchayats and Bal sabhas. Similarly, she also urged the public to reach out to every family and children in difficult circumstances through the child protection mechanism established within the GPU so that no child is left behind and that help is provided whenever needed. In addition, she stressed upon the aspects of empowerment of the families and children of the GPU so that every child of the village can grow and develop to their full potential.
The program saw the attendance of officials of DCPU, ICPS (SJE&WD), officials of Health Department, Child Line workforce, members of NGOs, Senior Citizens, Panchayats, School staff, teachers and children and public of the area.
