An eight-member pugilist team of Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association [SABA] will be representing Sikkim in the 3rd edition of Junior Women’s Boxing Championship to be held from 08 to 13 September at National Boxing Academy, Rothak in Haryana. The team will be leaving for the championship on Thursday.
The State team members are Yasika Rai [46 kgs], Sarathi Mukhia [48 kgs], Simron Pradhan [50 kgs], Ganga Biswakarma [52 kgs], Tenzing Palmu Bhutia [54 kgs], Muskaan Khatoon [57 kgs], Deepa Rai [60 kgs] and Yangchenla Lama Sherpa [63 kgs]. The team will be accompanied by Sunita Chettri as team coach, Vabiya Gurung as assistant coach and Roshni Subba as team manager, Pritam Shilal from Sikkim will also serve the championship as referee/judge.
The championship is being organized by Haryana Amateur Boxing Association under the aegis of Boxing Federation of India [BFI].
Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, SABA president, Arjuna Awardee Jaslal Pradhan informed that the selection trial for the State team was held here on 20 August and the selection committee has shortlisted eight pugilists out of around 30 participated in the selection trial. He mentioned that except for Sarathi Mukhia, Ganga Biswakarma and Simran Pradhan the rest pugilists in the State team have been participating in the national championship for the first time. He expressed his hope that the State team will perform its best to win medals and laurels for the State.
Mr Pradhan informed that SABA has been sending continuously sending State teams in all national and regional level championships. Pemlaki Bhutia in youth women and Krishna Kailash Rai in youth men from Sikkim have been selected for the national coaching camp and two Sikkimese coaches, Sandhya Gurung [senior women team] and Mukesh Rai Mukesh Rai [sub-junior men team] are in National Panel for National Coaching Camp, he informed.
It is also informed that the State also has three International Boxing Association Star certified coaches, Sandhya Gurung [Star II coach], Mukesh Rai [Star II coach] and Anoj Pradhan [Star I coach].
