In order to adopt the Sikkim Organic Farming model in Satara, Maharastra, Shri Rajesh Pawar, Chairman, Education and Finance, Zilla Parishad Satara along with nine Members and Officers visited the ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong on December 09, 2019.
At the beginning of the program, Dr. R. K. Avasthe, Joint Director ICAR–NOFRI welcomed the dignitaries from Satara, Maharastra. In his opening remarks, he apprised the Chairman and officials about the various research, capacity building and skill development work undertaken by the ICAR–NOFRI and KVK-East Sikkim during the last five years especially for doubling the farmers’ income by March 2022 and livelihood improvement through the organic farming approach.
He also gave a brief introduction about the importance of organic farming under changing climate scenarios and explained the importance of the integration of different components of IOFS in a way so that output of each component is used as the input for the other components in IOFS module. He also detailed the benefits of the integrated organic farming systems (IOFS) model to marginal and small farmers for livelihood and nutritional security in the state.
Later on, Shri Rajesh Pawar, Chairman, Education and Finance, Zilla Parishad Satara briefed about the purpose of his teams’ visit to Sikkim. He appreciated the work carried out by the ICAR-NOFRI for the continuous betterment of the farming community of the Sikkim.
Thereafter, the visitors’ team visited the ICAR Research Farm and instructed the officers to develop such kind of model to showcase them to the farmers of the Satara district of Maharashtra for adoption. Chairman, Members, and Officers from Satara also interacted with the scientists of ICAR-NOFRI regarding the technologies developed at Research Farm.
They were interested in the management of insect-pest and diseases through organic ways. Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Sr. Scientist shared information about the experiments undertaken in the NPOF project. Similarly, Dr. Rafiqul Islam briefed about the rearing of goat, deep litter housing model for pig and the backyard Vanaraja poultry program being successfully implemented in Sikkim. Dr. Chandan Kapoor explained regarding the organic variety development and organic seed production program besides, organic nutrient management. (PIB)
