National Senior Chess Championship 2019 will be starting here at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology [SMIT] premises, Majhitar in East Sikkim on Tuesday. The prestigious chess championship of the country is being organized by Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] on behalf of All India Chess Federation [AICF].
A total of 192 top-rated players from all States, Union Territories, and PSUs have been participating in this ten-day long championship. The participating players include 20 Grandmasters and 25 International Grandmasters along with FIDE Masters, Women International Masters and top-rated players of the country. It is informed that all participants have already arrived by this evening for the championship.
Likewise, a nine-member Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] team is all set to give their best in the championship. The State team members are Rahul Gurung, Rakesh Gurung, Thendup Tamang, Rohit Gurung, Sushmita Lama, Rick Gupta, Abhiraj Parajuli, Sahil Chettri and Priyansh Yagnick. Apart from their regular daily practice, the State team members have undergone through a special two-month long training under SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal for the championship.
Mr Dhakal stated that it was a big honour for Sikkim to host such a prestigious championship for the first time. He further stated that Sikkim was also the first state in the north-eastern region to host this championship in the region.
On the State team, he mentioned that the state team members have undergone through a rigorous training session and all set to give their best performance in the championship. “The championship is also a big exposure and a good opportunity for local players to improve their rating. It is also a rare opportunity to host such many GMs and IMs in the State,” he said.
The finals of the championship is on 19 December. The championship carries the total prize money of Rs 20 lakhs.
