A mega mock drill exercise on earthquake was conducted at Pakyong Sub Division under East District covering simultaneously SDM office, Pakyong Baazar, New Market, Pakyong Airport, Old Puspanjali School area, Pakyong Primary Health Centre, Community Hall and St Xaviers school playground under supervision of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in Co ordination with State Disaster Management Department, Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department ( SSDMA, LR&DMD)
The mock exercise was conducted at 11am. A hypothetical warning siren was generated by IMD and an earthquake shaking signals was set out.
All the staff in SDM office were seen doing cover hold in their respective rooms and an immediate action of evacuation carried out to a safer, open place by the section head.
Soon after few minutes reports incident emergency command post or control room was set up in front of SDM office where all HODs gathered.
At first there was total collapse of communication but soon with the help of police wireless set the search and rescue operation was conducted. Resources like ambulance, mini bus were deployed at the staging areas as per requirement. Teams of task force,NDRF, PWP and many NGOs and ither authorities reached out to the sites and started a rescue operation.
The people who were trapped in collapse building below Pakyong thana were evacuated and rescued by SDRF and the fire that was caught in the top of taxi stand floor was douse out by fire personnel.
Similarly forest personnel were involved in clearing the fallen trees.
The purpose of this exercise was to measure and validate performance of the public and institutional awareness and preparedness and response plan.
Later, a briefing session was conducted at Pakyong Community hall, where an observers from respective spots have lauded the drill and delivered their observation particularly on positive and negative points and some recommendation as well. This mock exercise was conducted as per the Incident Response System.
