Gangtok, July 14
The Black Cat Division celebrated the Birth centenary of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, Padma Bhushan, PVSM at Nathu La today with full military grandeur.
General Officer Commanding 17 Mtn Div inaugurated a bust of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, at Baba Harbhajan Shrine near Sherathang and laid a wreath in honour of the Late hero to whom we attribute the Indian Army’s presence at Natu La today.
During the unprovoked belligerence by the Chinese at Natu La and Cho La in August and September 1967 respectively, General Sagat Singh displayed leadership of the highest order and gave a befiting reply to the Chinese. Due to his resolute outlook, the Indian Army stood firm at these two passes and showed to the Nation and the World that such hostile acts by the Chinese would not go unchallenged.
The Tri Colour continues to flutter with pride today at Natu La because of the grit, determination and farsightedness of the officer and our Nation shall always remain greatful to him. Indeed, he shall always be remembered as ‘The Iron Man of Natu La’.
