A total of 304 shuttlers have participated in the 30th edition of Sikkim State Badminton Championship 2019 here at the Indoor Gymnasium Hall of Paljor Stadium Complex. The six-day long championship is being organised by Badminton Association of Sikkim [BAS] from 25 July.
The official opening ceremony of the championship was held on Saturday, which has the Secretary to Animal Husbandry, Livestock, Fisheries & Veterinary Services, Dr RK Tamang as the chief guest. The opening ceremony also has Sikkim Olympic Association president, BK Roka and BAS president, C Zangpo among other dignitaries.
In his inaugural address, the chief guest expressed his best wishes to all participating players in the championship. He also appreciated the efforts of BAS for continuously organising the state championship and other activities to promote local players in the higher levels. He also officially declared the opening of the 30th Sikkim State Badminton Championship 2019.
The inaugural function was followed by the commencement of matches of the championship. The chief guest and other guests also handed over medals, certificates and cash prizes to few winners in U-11, U-13 and U-15 categories.
BAS general secretary, Sukanta Das informed that 304 shuttlers from all four districts and 50 schools have participated in the championship. The championship has a total of 27 events from U-11 to Veterans [60 plus] categories and carries the cash prize of total Rs 2.5 lakhs along with medals, trophies and certificates. He mentioned that the selection committee of BAS will also select players from this state badminton championship to represent Sikkim in the upcoming North East Zonal and other national level tournaments.
Dr Das mentioned that BAS was all set to host the North East Zonal Badminton Championship from 16 to 19 September here at indoor gymnasium hall in Paljor Stadium complex. Sikkim is hosting this championship for the fourth time after a gap of eight years.
Speaking on new initiatives of BAS, he informed that the association has started the State ranking tournaments in the State to have the list of State ranking players in different categories. He mentioned that the ranking tournaments will be conducted in all districts and other parts of the State. He mentioned that players would get points from each ranking tournaments and will be calculated at the end of the year and will be ranked according to their points. Mr Das stated that BAS has series of activities throughout the year.
