Opening of sacred Mt. Kangchendzonga for mountaineering and trekking expeditions by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has triggered a widespread criticism in Sikkim.
The MHA’s move has upset Sikkimese as the third highest mountain in the world (8,586m) is worshiped in Sikkim, and the announcement has come in as a rude shock to the indigenous community of the state.
Civil societies, tribal organization started protesting the move and some organisation have even threatened that before Pang Lhabsol festival that falls on 13 September which is dedicated to Mt Kanchenjunga and before that if center fails to withdrawn the notification then they will hit the street for protest.
Meanwhile, “Save Khangchendzonga Forum” was constituted today under the aegis of Press Club of Sikkim. The main demand of the forum is to appeal MHA to withdraw recent notification to allow adventure in Mt Khangchendzonga.
The forum would be organising a signature campaign soon and after the signature campaign various resource person from concern organization will deliver their talk on that subject matter.
And the forum believed that the latest notification from Home Ministry will open the gates for people to exploit and climb over Mount Khangchendzonga, a sacred mountain to the people of Sikkim
