Geyzing, June 28
Yoksum – Tashiding road blocked at a place called Lang Khola near Gerethang since last night due to landslide has been reopened today in the evening. The road that connects Geyzing, Pelling with Yoksum constituency had become inaccessible due to massive landslide occurred at Lang Khola. After a day long effort put up by the workforce deployed by the road and bridges department the road has been reopened. The massive volume of landslide has caused a partial damage to the iron bridge constructed over the streamlet. The road that has been constructed through a steep cliff was blocked at the same place few days ago too due to landslide.
The local residents informed that road extension work through back cutting has recently been completed at Lang Khola and the landslide may be a frequent phenomenon at the said site as loose boulders and soils accumulated at a newly excavated site when exposed to sun and rain could be a cause of soil erosion and landslides. They shared that scope for construction of protection wall at that particular stretch of road is null and void considering the construction of the road at a steep site.
It was further informed that landslides occur frequently at Langkhola during rainy season leading to traffic snarls from time to time. The people of the constituency have requested the concerned department to find a concrete solution so that the issue of frequent road blockade due to natural causes could be addressed in a proper way. “During rainy season the constituency (Yoksum – Tashiding) remains isolated from other constituencies of the state due to frequent landslides triggered by rain that entangled the traffic flow. We expect the concerned department to be more vigilant this time for maintaining proper traffic movement this time and we are ready to assist the department”, a person said.
In case of frequent road obstruction caused by the natural forces especially the students who study at various educational institutions of Geyzing, daily commuters, and the people who works at different government offices of Geyzing along with the business community suffer a lot. It seems that the concerned department must work hard during this monsoon season to keep the flow of traffic undisturbed as many places under Yoksum Tashiding constituency are prone to frequent landslides.
