Singtam, Sept 3
The Department of Addiction Psychiatry, Singtam District Hospital conducted Stress Management workshop for patients suffering with anxiety disorders, counselors & staffs at Singtam District Hospital on 3rd Sept 2019. Resource persons were Dr Satish Rasaily ( Addiction Medicine specialist), Miss Pinkey Bhutia & Sonam Tongden.
Dr Satish Rasaily shared that many patients struggling with anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse and stress related disorders complained of repetitive panic attacks, sleep problems, unexplained physical complaint, fear & apprehension & chronic pain triggered by any minor stressful event. At times, we use negative coping strategies to manage these stresses such as avoidance, self withdrawal, anger, temper tantrums, violence, deliberate self harm, binge eating and indulgence in alcohol & drugs which can be detrimental to our health, relationship, family & job.
If we use positive coping strategies to cope with any stressful events, every stress shall improve our self confidence, self esteem, potential and performances. He also highlighted several cognitive strategies to deal with fear, anxiety and any events. A mindfulness meditation technique was also conducted by Dr Satish Rasaily.
Miss Pinkey Bhutia emphasised on the importance of daily activity scheduling such as maintenance of sleep-wake cycle, sleep hygiene, balanced diet, brisk exercise, hobbies, sports activity, recreation, reading books, music therapy, & avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, drugs & caffeinated drinks.
Miss Sonam Tongden conducted different breathing exercise’s, distraction technique’s to divert attention from painful stimuli & disturbing thoughts, and Jacobson progressive muscle relaxation ( JPMR).
Positive feedback was shared by patients regarding treatment & workshop to Dr Tsering Laden ( CMO) East and thank the team of Dept of Addiction Psychiatry for helping them to manage their fears & anxiety.
