Gangtok, Sept 3
Sports climbers from Sikkim have expressed their disappointment on not getting opportunity to participate in the upcoming All India Indian Mountaineering Foundation [IMF] Sport Climbing Competition to be held this month in Sikkim. They alleged that neither the concerned association of sports climbers nor local sports climbers were informed or invited for the event.
It has to be mentioned here that Sikkim is hosting the fourth edition of All India Indian Mountaineering Foundation [IMF] Sport Climbing Competition from 6 to 8 September at Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure & Ecotourism [IHCEA] at Chemchey in South Sikkim under the aegis of Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi. The competition will have the experienced climbers from all seven IMF zones spread all across the country.
Addressing a press conference, advisor to Sikkim Mountaineering Association [SMA] and Sikkim Sports Climbing Association [SSCA], Satish Bardewa stated that it was really matter of pride that Sikkim was hosting the national sports climbing. However, he expressed that the concerned association and sports climbers of Sikkim were not informed and invited in the event.
He stated that IHCEA was an asset for the State and if local climbers would not get the opportunity in the event to be held in their own State then it was very unfortunate. He asserted on the need to provide opportunity to local climbers to take them to higher levels and to bring our more climbers from the State. Mr Bardewa mentioned that SMA and climbers were called during disaster and rescue operations but now to ignore them when there was a platform to perform would affect the morale of climbers.
SSCA vice-president mentioned that local climbers have been winning medals in the national and regional level sports climbing but it was very sad that they have not get the opportunity to perform in their home State. He also expressed his disappointment on not getting any information and invitation of the event. He mentioned that climbers from Sikkim have been getting invitation for sports climbing regularly from different parts of the country but not get the opportunity in an event in Sikkim was very sadden. He informed that there are around 25 sports climbers in the State who have been performing in the national and regional level competitions.
