Chingthang, Sept 5
Training cum demonstration program on off farm inputs was held at Panchayat Bhawan of Chingthang GPU, West Sikkim under MOVCD (Mission Organic Value Chain Development). The training was organized by FPO and Service Provider Agency Mevedir. The Progressive farmers and several Farmer Interest Groups were invited as participants to this training program to be aware of the off farm inputs and how to use these organic certified inputs in their major cash crops.
The key participants of this training were Smt. Babita Khati and Smt. Sunita Rai (Panchayat member), Shri Tobzer Dorji Bhutia (Executive Officer Indian Gramin Service), Shri Purna Singh Rai (FPO President), Shri Yogendra Rai (RDO), Ms. Soma Rai (FPO-CEO) and the key resource person of this training was Mr. Jason Nim Sherpa and Mr. Diwas Chettri from Mevedir.
The training session was chaired by Shri Topzer Dorji Bhutia who welcomed all the participants and briefed about the Off Farm Inputs and On farm Inputs. He educated the farmers about the Farmer’s crop insurance where farmers have to pay premium amount for crops. Incase if there is a loss of crops due to natural calamities, the amount will be provided by the Government. Mr. Bhutia also shared about the Farmers Health Insurance Scheme.
In the next session Mr. Jason Nim Sherpa informed the participants about what is off farm inputs and on farm input. He also highlighted some of the benefits of these inputs. Thereafter Mr. Diwas Chettri explained the role and the use of bio fertilizers and bio pesticides in controlling diseases that affect the productivity of the crops. The proper usage of the various bio fertilizers like Green SK Azoto, Green SK PSB, VAM Plus and Sheel Rhizobium andhow they could treat seeds, apply in soil and crop foliage was explained to the farmers. Likewise the bio pesticides such as Bio Magic and Bio Power was also explained and how it can control pests like borers, khumlay, cutworms, root grubs, leafhoppers. Whitefly, Aphids, and mealy bug were also explained to the farmers.
In the last session Mr. Purna Singh Rai (FPO President) spoke about the value of Organic Farming. He appealed all the youth and new generation to focus on agricultural field production and explained about the scope in agriculture field and how we need to be self sufficient in our production and not be dependent upon external resources. He highlighted that it was time for the educated generation to come forward and be involved in innovative agricultural startups.
The assembled participants were thanked for their time and the farmers were informed that any other queries or difficulty in application of these inputs Mr. Diwash Chettri from Mevedir would be available to explain and assist them. Mr. Diwas also informed about the Organic input outlet at Geyzing and Jorethang where farmers can get above mention inputs, seeds and other agricultural equipments and tools. About 25 members from the Grower Groups attended this days training. The days training concluded by distributing all the above inputs to farmers by the Panchayat members and other officials present in the training program.
