Gangtok, Aug 16
Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum [SPYF] has announced to start a strong state-wide movement against the recent defection of Sikkim Democratic Front legislators in Bharatiya Janata Party and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party. The organisation has demanded that the defected legislators should resign immediately for breaking the trust of the people and for disrespecting the people’s mandate. In its series of state-wide activities, SPYF has announced to start its protest from a mass protest rally on 18 August in Gangtok.
Addressing a press conference here today, a SPYF member Shankar Sharma expressed that the mandate of the people have been overlooked in the recent political development in the State. He added that the people have been considered as the most powerful in the democracy and the people use their power to choose their representatives to work in their interest. He informed that the people brought SKM in the power and kept SDF in the opposition in this election. However, he added that due defection another party which hardly gets 1.62% of votes became the main opposition party in the assembly.
Mr Sharma alleged that horse-trading of legislators after the election without the consultation and knowledge of the people was disrespect to the people’s mandate and direct attack on their democratic right. He also state that the election process took huge amount of money and hard work but if the people’s representatives would not respect the people’s mandate then there was no use of the election and representative should be selected through tender or auction. He added that the present defection was totally unacceptable for the people of Sikkim.
“We have decided to take our movement ahead through the Citizen Forum against Defected MLAs. It is an open forum for all to come together. Our movement will continue until these defected MLAs would not give resignation on moral ground,” Mr Sharma said. He appealed all democratic people and organisations to join this movement to save democracy and to give respect to the people’s mandates. He asserted that these legislators do not deserve to be the people’s representatives and to enter into the assembly.
Another SPYF member, Rupen Karki mentioned that the political parties make promises and give their manifesto while asking votes and people gives their votes by trusting them on their promises. He added that the defection after getting their votes was totally against the interest, hope and aspiration of the people. He asserted that it was totally disrespect to the people’s mandate. He strongly condemned and criticised the defection of SDF legislators in different parties. He expressed that the people were in very confusion due to recent political development in the State.
On the same, Mr Karki demanded that these defected legislators should immediately resign for disrespecting the people’s mandates. He alleged that hope and aspiration of the people on the political party has been betrayed by these political leaders. He added that these leaders have played with the trust and sentiments of the people of Sikkim. He appealed the people to join the mass rally in the capital on 18 August. He asserted that to show anger and reaction only in the social media was not enough but it was the high time for them to come out on the field in reality.
