The Sub – Divisional Level awareness programme for co – operative societies was held today here at community hall, Geyzing. The programme was jointly organized by Sikkim State Co – Operative Union (SICUN) and West District Zilla Panchayat.
The event attended by ADC (west) Karma Lodey Lepcha as the chief guest also had presence of Sikkim State Co – Operative Union (SICON) L.P Kafley, director of SICON Bishnu Chamling,
L.P Kafley in his keynote address maintained that SICUN is working committedly to foster the co – operative societies in the state. He said that SICUN would work in various fields of the society in tandem with the co – operative societies of the state to cater numerous development based services. Informing about aims of awareness programme, Kafley expressed that the objective of the programme was to aware the members of the co – operative societies about the schemes, facilities and also about their responsibilities to make those societies effective and far reaching.
Speaking on importance of need of keeping proper accounts of the co -operative societies registered under MPCS, the auditor, Pravesh Bhujel mentioned that maintenance of account registers related to various monetary based subjects and others are needed to ensure transparency and correct way of functioning. The branch manager of SISCO bank Anuja Gurung spoke about various schemes and loan facilities being provided to the co – operative societies in the state in the different fields such as agriculture and animal husbandry with guaranteed subsidy if the loan is returned on fixed period of time. She expressed that SISCO has been providing loans to the registered co – operative societies those come up with an aim of starting a new venture. However she maintained that in case of failure of repaying the loan for the period of four years, the particular society could be blacklisted as the defaulter. She further informed that the farmers are being provided loans through Kishan Credit Card (KCC) with the provision of subsidy to bring about a needed development in the agriculture sector. Gurung Also spoke about insurances on animal and agricultural crops.
Kinzang Bhutia who is the general secretary of Kanchenjunga Conservation Committee (Yuksam) speaking about scope of rural tourism in West Sikkim expressed that the tourism sector is the second alternative that could play a major role to uplift the economic conditions of the people apart from agriculture. He added that if the co – operatives societies of the state as in other parts of India come forward collectively to work for the upliftment of the tourism sector then Sikkim would be a major tourism hub in the country. He shared that exploration of tourism potential of West Sikkim, maintaining tourism sector in a proper way, accelerating the tourism sector through culture, nature and religion based activities could be done in a collective way through co – operative societies. We just need a well-designed approach for the development of rural tourism in West Sikkim, he said.
Resource person, Bimal Rai speaking on the topic of leadership development maintained that leaders operating various co – operative societies should have clear and honest vision in regard to taking the societies further in terms of progress and development. He exerted that dedication, commitment, sincerity and desire to do something constructive pave a way for betterment of any society and public organizations.
ADC (west) Karma Lodey Lepcha appreciated the initiative and added that such programme would help to aware the co – operative societies about their role and responsibilities. He expressed that various works and plans have to be taken up to make the co – operative societies involved in the developmental activities. Lepcha added that participations of the co – operative societies in the field of tourism and agricultural sector has become a necessary to ensure proper development of such sectors.
Zilla, Panchayat members, officials from various departments were felicitated by SICUN today recognizing their contributions in the various fields of the society.
