As part of the silver jubilee celebration, the Western Modern English Junior High School (WMEJHS) organized marathon today in various categories. Included under sporting activities, marathon was organized in an open, inter school and veteran categories.
In the mens open 10 kilometres category, Ganga Hang Limboo of Uttarey stood first while Lahang Limboo from Yuksam and Ram Bahadur Neupaney from Gangtok finished second and third respectively. The cash prizes of rupees 10,000, 7,000 and 5,000 along with medals and certificates were handed over to top three finishers.
In the inter school 5 kilometres run students from Darap Senior Secondary, West Sikkim claimed the top three positions. Monahang Limboo, Sushil Limboo and Nishan Limboo stood first second and third respectively. The cash prizes of rupees 3000, 2000 and 1000 along with medals and certificates were given to the top three positions holder.
The inter school girls’ 5 kilometers marathon, Rimbi Secondary School, West Sikkim walked away with the top three spots. Yunam Limboo clocked first and Semy Limboo and Saru Hangma Limboo finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Rupees 3000, 2000 and 1000 were given as the cash prizes along with medals and certificates to the participants.
Suresh Agarwal from Geyzing and Dinesh Rai from Darap finished first and second in the veteran 10 kilometers run. Medals and certificates were handed over to them.
The strength lifter and arm wrestler Ganesh Kumar Subba had flagged off the marathon today. The ultra-marathoner Amar Subba who is a member of the organizing committee had co – ordinated the marathon.
Amar Subba informed that marathon was part of the sporting activities initiated by the silver jubilee celebration committee and the objective of the initiative was promotion of marathon in the state. ” We, the organizing committee felt that as part of the commemorative event of WMEJHS should include sports based activities too for promotion of sporting culture”, he said.
Ganesh Kumar Subba appreciated the sports based initiative taken by WMEJHS and maintained that such steps help to promote sports in the state.
