Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club (SHSC) will take on Kolkata’s giant, Mohammedan Sporting Club in the finals of the 39th All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2019 here at Paljor Stadium on Tuesday. In the tightly played second quarter-final match on Sunday afternoon, a hope of the home team, Sikkim Police to reach the finals of the tournament got crashed when it went down to Mohammedan SC by a solitary goal.
The only goal in the match by Charls Atcha for Mohammedan SC in the first half took his team in the finals of the tournament for the tenth time. Mohammedan SC is two times champion of the tournament in years 1980 and 2016 and remained runners-up for seven times in the past.
Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club is already in the finals of the tournament after outplaying Royal Football Club, Siliguri 3-1 in the first semi-final match on Saturday evening.
Sikkim Police players played their hearts out throughout the match but could not able to breach the strong defence line of Mohammedan SC to net any goal. Mohammedan SC players also got some good opportunities to extend their lead but could not able to give the successful finishing. Finally, Mohammedan SC has secured its berth in the finals of the tournament with 1-0 victory.
The final match is scheduled to be kicked off at 1:30 PM on 12 November. There will be an exhibition match between Chief Minister XI and Chief Secretary XI from 11:30 PM before the final match. It is informed that Chief Minister XI is likely to lead by Chief Minister PS Tamang as team captain.
On the final day, Sikkim Football Association has also decided to felicitate ISL players, Bikash Jairu and Robin Gurung and football promoters of yesteryears, late Balchand Sarda [posthumously] and Lhendup Lepcha. SFA has also decided to felicitate former footballers, Karma Loday Bhutia, Hem Raj Cintury, B Tshering and Sonam Doma Lepcha on the occasion.
