Press Release

Gangtok, Jan 11

The SDF party has congratulated Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and the SDF government for initiating historic “One Family One Job” program in the interest of the people of the State.

SDF Spokesperson KT Gyaltsen said that this program which is pro-youth and based on humanitarian ground will ensure that every deserving family in Sikkim will have one member employed and benefited under the scheme.

During the critical phase of political crisis which prevailed in Sikkim in the late eighties and where the people at large felt the need for change in the system, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party was founded under the leadership of Pawan Chamling on 4th March, 1993.  The primary object and political philosophy of the party was to restore democracy and the rule of law in Sikkim. With the visionary leadership of Pawan Chamling and the overwhelming support of the people the SDF party was successful in forming the first people’s government on 12th December, 1994.  While reflecting on this historic victory and the power of the people, Shri Pawan Chamling had aptly observed, “The revolution that started on 4th March (1993) gave an idea of the collective strength of the people who had lived in fear and terror for a long time.”

Looking back into the past 25 years of the SDF government, Sikkim has witnessed rapid development and achievements in every sector.  The social, economic and political rights of every citizen of the State and every section of the population of Sikkim have been fully preserved, protected and promoted.  In other words no aboriginal ethnic communities of Sikkim are outside the purview of reservation and justice.  Today Sikkim is known to the world as the State which symbolises peace, security, opportunity, communal harmony and development.

Despite several challenges and obstacles the SDF government has made historic achievements such as opening of the Nathula Border Trade Route to Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansorovar, providing exemption from paying Income Tax under the Income Tax, 1961 (Direct Tax Laws) for the Sikkimese people based on the Sikkim Subject Certificate, Sikkim being recognised as the first Organic State in the world, providing fifty percent reservation of seats for the women in the Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies, etc. Further, with the committed efforts of Shri Pawan Chamling and the SDF government the Limboo and Tamang communities of Sikkim have been recognised as Scheduled Tribes. The government is now relentless making efforts and requesting the Government of India for providing seats for the Limboo and Tamang communities of Sikkim in the State Legislative Assembly and also for providing Scheduled Tribes status for the eleven left-out communities of Sikkim as these are matters which fall within the power and jurisdiction of the Parliament and Government of India.

With the farsighted vision and leadership of Shri Pawan Chamling the people have bestowed their faith in his leadership and have elected the SDF party in government for the five consecutive terms.  Today Sikkim is proud that Pawan Chamling is in the service of the people as the longest serving Chief Minister of India.  His experienced leadership and statesmanship has been fully recognised and appreciated in India and abroad.

As a result of the scientific, innovative and pro-people policies the SDF government has initiated a unique, unprecedented and youth-centric program under the title, “One Family One Job.”
