Kokhphekwa Tongnam kick Starts

The three day Kokhphekwa Tongnam, a New Year festival of Limboo community organized by Limboo community of Lingchom began here today at Lingchom Senior Secondary School under Yangthang constituency, West Sikkim.

 The three day Kokhphekwa Tongnam, a New Year festival of Limboo community organized by Limboo community of Lingchom began here today at Lingchom Senior Secondary School under Yangthang constituency, West Sikkim. 

Area MLA Chandra Maya Subba who is the chief patron of the festival organizing committee had graced the inaugural event of the festival as chief guest. Chandra Maya Subba formerly inaugurated the festival today in the presence of dignitaries from Limboo communities and others.

President of the organizing committee, Purna Hang Limboo shared that objective behind organizing Kokhphekwa Tongnam was all about preserving and protecting cultural heritage of Limboo community. He added that bringing Limboo community close to their culture and traditions through cultural activities was another effort of the organizing committee.

Chandra Maya Subba in her brief address appreciating the initiative taken by the Limboo community of Lingchom expressed that such initiative contributes towards protection and preservation of Limboo community cultural heritage. She added that preserving language, culture, customs and traditions of any community mean ensuring their existence. She claimed that SDF government has ensured religious secularism in the state and preservation and protection of cultural heritage of all the communities of Sikkim have happened under current regime.

Speaking about Limboo Tamang seat reservation issue, Chandra Maya Subba alleged that seats reservation for the two community of the state has got delayed due to ignorant attitude of central government. Claiming that the state government has done everything in its capacity to reserve the seats for Limboo Tamang Community, Chandra Maya Subba stated that the matter is now completely in the hands of prime minister Narendra Modi led BJP government. Casting her doubt over central government’s approach towards seats reservation issue, MLA Chandra Maya expressed that she is doubtful that the central government’s ‘dilly dally’ attitude towards seat reservation issue is politically motivated and an effort to sabotaged SDF government. Chandra Maya Subba further alleged that seats reservation for the LT community has been delayed also due to hurdles created by some individual and opposition parties of the state.

Adding further she expressed that seats reservation is constitutional rights of Limboo Tamang communities and even Modi government would not be able to keep the issue pending. ‘Narendra Modi led government could not stop Limboo Tamang communities from having their seat reserved in the state assembly as the seat reservation is their constitutional right’, she said. 

She exhorted that people should not believe the opposition parties’ ploy of creating division among the people through propaganda based on caste, religion and race for gainig votes. Saying that Sikkim should not fall in the hands of destructive elements, Subba said that the upcoming election is all about saving Sikkim’s peace, progress and tranquility.

Other attraction of the event today was the first round of Chyabrung competition, cultural dance competition, kids fashion show competition and other traditional activities. Sunita Thegim, a renowned singer of Limboo community had also performed in the event today. She performed on some of her popular limboo songs and some other Nepali numbers. 

The three daylong event will conclude on 15 January.
