CM dedicates New STNM Multi-speciality Hospital to the people of Sikkim

Gangtok, 14 Jan
Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has inaugurated the 1000-bedded Multi Speciality Hospital at Sochaygang, Sichey in East Sikkim on Monday. He dedicated the hospital to the people of Sikkim. On the occasion, he has also laid the foundation stone of the first Government Medical College of Sikkim.
In his address, the CM stated that it was a historic and happiest day for Sikkim and its people for having the 1000-beded multispecialty hospital. He added that this historic day will always be remembered in the health sector of the State. He mentioned that the SDF government had taken the decision to build this multispecialty hospital in year 2009 to provide the world-class medical service to the people of Sikkim but there was no any fund to start the work. He stated that then bureaucrats expressed that it was impossible to build such multispecialty hospital but the government stood still on its decision and the foundation stone of the hospital was laid in 2010.
“I am very satisfied and happy now for the people of Sikkim for having the biggest multispecialty government hospital in the State. It is the biggest government hospital after AIIMS New Delhi in the country. It is an important milestone for Sikkim,” he said. He informed that funds from plan and non-plan of the State were used to construct the hospital and a soft loan of Rs 200 was taken to buy the medical equipments.
CM stated that it was the biggest landmark achievement of SDF government in the health sector. “We have created the new history by preserving the history of STNM Hospital. To keep our history the hospital will be named as New STNM Multispecialty Hospital,” he informed. He directed to immediately shift STNM Hospital to this new structure and to be fully functional by 01 February.
He mentioned that the hospital has been equipped with the latest and advance machines and technologies. He informed that the hospital has latest machine for TB detection, advance machine in radiology, 23 operation theatres, health care assistants will be available 24X7 and others. He informed that there will the eight free bus services from Gangtok to the hospital around the clock to bring the people and also has ICU ambulances. He informed that the hospital complex also has a Yatri Niwas which has 119 beds and dining hall for attendants of the patients and an auditorium having seating capacities for 300 persons.
While mentioning that the government has not only focused on the curative but also on preventive measures, the CM informed that the government has provided free vaccine for hepatitis- B, MDR and HPV to the people and Sikkim was also the first state to start the free HPV vaccine campaign for cervical cancer. He mentioned that CATCH programme of the State government was the unique in the country. He expressed that the State government has been working on the mission-mode to make Sikkim TB Free State by 2022 and urged everyone for their support and contribution for the success of this mission.
CM mentioned that this hospital was fully digital and has been connected to all district hospitals of the State. He added that the hospital has been equipped with latest equipments and facilities in every department and the people do not need to go outside the State for treatment. He mentioned that the people can have the best world class treatment in their own State. He mentioned that the people from neighbouring hills and States can also available these facilities of the hospital. On the same, the CM has urged doctors, nurses and entire staffs of the hospital to provide the best service to the people.
CM mentioned that the new hospital has already created lots of employment opportunities for local youths and more than 100 youths of the area have already got jobs in C and D grade in the hospital and 3-4 youths from every constituency will get jobs in the hospital. He added that the hospital has also created other immense opportunities for the people of Sichey and surrounding areas of the hospital to earn their livelihood. While mentioning that the area was growing into a medical centre and an educational hub, he urged the people to be happy for having these opportunities and extend their full support and cooperation to the hospital by working in the common interest.
CM mentioned that the upcoming State Medical College in the area will also promote the area as the educational hub. He informed that the first Medical College of the State would provide the free education to Sikkimese students. He informed that the SDF government has programme and provisions to provide the best world-class treatment and services to the people of Sikkim.
“We have provided the best medical facilities and services to the people of Sikkim in these 24 years with our unique and exemplary initiatives in the health sector,” he said. On the same, he asserted that if any political party give irresponsible and wrong statement in health sector then doctors and medical fraternity to speak on the same to give the clear message to the people.
CM stated that SDF government has been committed to the people and programmes of the government have been connected to the life of the people of Sikkim. On the same, he urged doctors, officials and staffs of the health departments to give their full support the success of the government mission in the health sector.
While mentioning that the life expectancy of the people of Sikkim has increased by 11 years in last 20 years, the CM congratulated doctors, nurses and entire medical fraternity of the State for their services. He stated that this shows the improvement in the health of the people of Sikkim.
He stated that physical health was not only enough but mind and body needs to be healthy. On the same, he urged the hospital to work seriously on the field of psychosomatic. He asserted that psychosomatic was the problem of the present world and it was a very important issue to discuss on why the people have been getting mentally weak. On the same, he mentioned that some irresponsible elements have been just accusing the government for suicides but they do not want to go on deep on this issue. He also suggested the hospital to work on substance abuse and antibiotic resistant injections.
CM urged everyone to work sincerely and seriously deliver their responsibility and duties to provide the world class treatment and service.
He mentioned that SDF government has always worked in the interest of doctors and entire medical fraternity in these 24 years. He informed that the government has decided six years of qualifying service for promotion for gazetted and five years of qualifying service for C & D grade employees. On the same, he stressed that no employee should run for their promotion as they will get promotion automatically on their right time.
The programme started with the welcome address by Health Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Vishal Chauhan and technical report was presented by Principal Chief Enginner-cum-Secretary of Building & Housing Department, RB Thapa. The function ended with the presentation of the vote of thanks by Medical Superintendent, STNM Hospital, Dr KB Gurung.
On the occasion, Health Department led by the Health Minister AK Ghatani has felicitated the CM for his outstanding works and contributions in the health sector. CM launched 104 Grievance Redressal System and also felicitated the first batch of thirty mid-level health providers who have just completed a six-month training on community health and will now be posted in rural parts of Sikkim. They were trained under the Ayushman Bharat Programme. On the occasion, Managing Director, ACPL, Shamalendu Ghoshal, was felicitated by the CM for the successful completion and handing over of the State-of-the-Art Hospital to the State Government. A book on Ayurveda and alternate medicine titled ‘Tripoid of Health’ authored by Dr Gayatri Sharma, Ayurvedic Doctor , AYUSH Hospital, Sochaygang was also released by the CM.
