Two days Ashaar Mahotsav 2019, organized by Sarvodaya Samaj of Lingchom under Yangthang constituency concluded on Sunday here at Lingchom. The programme organized on cultural theme was attended by minister for agriculture Lok Nath Sharma as chief guest along with area MLA and minster (PHE) Bhim Hang Limboo, dignitaries and local gentries as the chief guest in the event.
Sarvodaya Samaj, a nongovernmental organization celebrates Ashaar Mahotsav every year with an aim of reviving the age of traditions related to agriculture and Ashaar, a month in the nepali calender based on Vikram Samvat. Ashaar 15 is considered as the harvest festival as paddy plantations starts from the 15th day of Ashaar in the hills and the farmers celebrates the Ashaar 15th as a day for entering the field for paddy cultivation.
A member of the organizing committee Rajesh Thapa informed that Ashaar Mahotsav was organized by the society to preserve the age old traditions and customs related to farming communities of hills. He said that the committee aims to revive the age old custom and tradition connected with Ashaar 15, which is in verge of extinction due to lack of knowledge and practices among new generation. Informing about the age old cultural traditions practiced by forefathers on 15th day of Ashaar, Thapa said that customs of offering puja to nature god before setting out to farms, singing ‘Bethi’ (traditional song) by the farmers while planting paddy for making work more entertaining and less exhausting were in practice in the times of forefathers along with other cultural activities. He added that the objective of the society is to revamp the age old traditions in order to preserve the cultural practice and heritage of the Nepali society so that new generation are informed and awared to keep the culture and traditions alive in future.
The event had been full of cultural activities such as cultural dances, pillow fighting, football, volleyball in both men and women category termed as ‘hiley sport’ on the wet field and quiz competition were the the attraction of the event. The event was also attended by Agriculture Minister Lok Nath Sharma.
Progressive farmers of Lingchom were felicitated by the organizing committee today. The participants in the sporting events were also awarded cash prizes and letters of appreciations.
Earlier, the ministers duo Bhim Hang Limboo and Lok Nath Sharma and men and women of the locality along with the dignitaries present in the event took part in paddy plantation drive.
