Gangtok, July 3: (IPR): Mission Director NHM, Dr PM Pradhan and Dr K B Gurung,Medical Superintendent, of New STNM Hospital launched Rotavirus vaccination in the routine immunization programme of Govt. of Sikkim by administering Rotavirus vaccine drops to infants below 1 year of age at New STNM Multi-specialty Hospital, Sochyagang.Other dignitaries present were HOD of Pediatrics, other paediatricians, senior health officials, Additional Medical Superintendents, officials of Urban Primary Health Centre, Gangtok and IEC officials along with representatives from WHO, JSI and UNICEF.
The launch was preceded by an address by State Immunization Officer of Sikkim, Dr P Denzongpa, to all the beneficiaries and care givers present at the venue on the seriousness of severe diarrhoea caused by Rotavirus amongst under five children and its only preventive measure through timely immunization of infants with Rotavirus vaccine. Five drops of Rotavirus vaccine has to be administered to infants at 6, 10 and 14 weeks of age along with Oral polio vaccine (OPV), Fractional Inactivated Polio Vaccine (fIPV) and Pentavalent vaccine to prevent hospitalization and deaths due to diarrhoea caused by Rotavirus. The Rotavirus vaccine will be available free of cost at all government health care centres like district hospitals, primary health centres, health sub-centres and all other routine immunization session sites.
The vaccine is being launched in all the district hospitals simultaneously. The ceremony was concluded by vote of thanks by Mission Director NHM.
