Aggrieved casual workers of Alembic Pharmaceutical Private Limited, Mamring-Samardung in South Sikkim have staged dharna infront of Labour Department head-office, Shram Bhawan here at Sokeythang from Monday evening. They marched from Singtam to Gangtok on Monday and reached Shram Bhawan in the late evening and staged their demonstration.
A list of eight-point demands signed by workers on dharna was also submitted in written to Labour Department Secretary on Tuesday afternoon. Aggrieved worker have announced to continue their dharna until all demand would not be addressed unconditionally by the concerned authority.
The list of demands include the company should take all the terminated employees back to work, the salary must be increased to Rs 20,000 per month, immediate withdrawal of arrest warrant against them and no such mistreatment to any worker in any company in Sikkim, abolish labour contract system from Sikkim, implement of ESIC, accidental insurance and others welfare measures in the interest of works of all companies of Sikkim, assurance on minimum safety measures for all workers and a medical check-up for workers twice a month, increase HRA to Rs 2000 from Rs 600 and the company should not initiate any kind of witch hunt against worker of the company
In the afternoon, Labour Department Secretary LP Chettri interacted with aggrieved workers of Alembic Pharmaceutical Private Limited on their different issues and demands. During the interaction, workers asked the department to interfere in the matter to deliver justice to them and stood still on their decision to continue with the dharna at Shram Bhawan premises until their demands would not be addressed. After the interaction, the Secretary assured aggrieved workers to call the officials from the management of Alembic Pharmaceutical Private Limited and to arrange meeting between representatives of the company, workers and the department on Wednesday morning.
It is informed that a casual worker, Binita Chettri was sent back home by an official of the company on 01 February and while enquired about the reason of her termination by other fellow workers a manhandled took place between two parties. It is further informed that later in the day the management of the company assured all workers to work on their demands and asked them to resume their respective works. Believing on the assurance, workers resumed their duties from 02 February but all of a sudden, the company directly terminated fifteen casual workers on 07 February without any reason.
Speaking to media persons, Binita Rai said, “After not getting justice and support from any side, we were compelled to take this stand to march from Singtam to Gangtok and now dharna at infront of Labour Department head-office to get the justice.” She questioned on the reason for the termination of fifteen workers of the company. She added that the next phase of the movement depends on the decision come out in tomorrow’s meeting. “We have the information that the company has also taken out a list of all fifteen terminated workers with photos and circulated to different companies in the State by calling us manner less and discipline less and not to take them in any company. This will spoil our life so we need support from all side to get the justice,” she said.
