81st birth anniversary of the legendary singer Late Narayan Gopal was celebrated today here at community hall, Geyzing. Paying tribute to Swar Samrat Narayan Gopal a musical programme was organized jointly by Hamro Samooha, Nari Shakti Samaj, Sarvodaya Samaj, All Sikkim Arm Wrestling Association and the Press Club of West Sikkim.
Padmashree Awardee B.B Muringla had graced the event as the chief guest. D.C (West) Karma R. Bonpo, artists from Gangtok, local artists and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
It may be mentioned here that the birth anniversary of Late Narayan Gopal falls on 4th October but the organizing committee had to postpone the programme owing to some unavoidable reasons and it was celebrated today.
Late Narayan Gopal, considered as one of the pioneer of Nepali music arena was born on 4th October 1939 and left this world on 5th December 1990. He has many popular Nepali numbers to his credit and his contributions towards enrichment of Nepali music is worhty and commendable.
At the outset a member of the organizing committee Rajesh Thapa presenting brief history about musical journey of singer Narayan Gopal shared that contributions of Late Narayan Gopal for enrichment and development of Nepali music is immense and commendable. He expressed that Narayan Gopal who has given many popular Nepali songs could be taken as a torch bearer to take Nepali music to present stage.
“All the songs of Late Narayan Gopal is evergreen and popular. Through his songs Narayan Gopal made the world realize the beauty of Nepali music. He has been an inspiration and encouragements for many noted musicians of Nepal and Darjeeling hills”, Thapa said.
He mentioned that musical programme was an effort of the organizing committee to pay musical tribute to Swar Samrat Narayan Gopal for his contributions towards Nepali music. “Remembering the legend on his birth anniversary, revering, keeping alive his memory and informing the young generation about the role played by Narayan Gopal for the development and progress of Nepali music were our humble effort”, Thapa added.
In the concert local artists and singers from Gangtok performed on popular numbers of Late Narayan Gopal. Grand Stave Music School of Gangtok had lent their support for the music arrangements.
Former secretary (Agriculture) and district collector (West) Shanta Pradhan and radio presenter and literature Yapchung Kazi were felicitated by the organizing committee for their contributions in the various fields of the society.
The organizing committee has thanked the persons, NGOs and the artists for their support for making the initiative successful.
