A popular festival of the State, Namprikdang Namsoong Festival will be held from 02 to 04 January 2020 at Namprikdang ground in Dzongu, North Sikkim. The festival on the theme ‘Confluence of Stories’ for this year will have cultural, traditional, musical and other colorful events. The celebration committee has included the story-telling sessions of folktales and stories mainly related to Namprikdang as a new attraction in the festival.
Addressing a press conference here today, a celebration committee member, Lhakpa Lepcha mentioned that Namprikdang Namsoong Festival is one of a popular and established festival of Sikkim. He mentioned that members of the Lepcha community have been celebrating the festival since 1976 at Namprikdang in Dzongu and with the passing of time the festival has become grander with series of cultural, traditional, musical and other events. “We have still have been gathering together to celebrate the festival to keep our culture and tradition alive and pass to the new generation. This is also an occasion to create awareness among the young generation and to involve them in such cultural and traditional activities,” he said. Mr. Lepcha appealed to the people of the State to come and be part of the celebration.
Another member of the celebration committee, Chewang Rinchen Lepcha mentioned that the celebration committee has tried to infuse new ideas and concepts in the celebration this time. Speaking on the theme, he said that story-telling sessions were another highlight of the celebration this time. “This is a platform for the people to share their stories and folktales especially related to Namprikdang. This is the first step towards to collect these folktales and stories and to document it for the coming generation,” he said. He mentioned that the logo of the festival was also signifies the idea of telling stories.
Likewise, another member of the celebration committee, Phurba Doma Lepcha mentioned that the three-day-long festival was full of traditional, cultural and musical events. She added that the festival will have a performance by local bands and artists, traditional games, traditional attire fashion show and other events along with traditional food stalls and DJ Night. She informed that the festival will also have experience sharing sessions by personalities of different fields to encourage youngsters.
