Kite flying enthusiasts from across the State will be in Tarey Bhir, South Sikkim on coming Monday to participate in the kite festival.
The festival be held on 31st Dec to 1st Jan.Rup Narayan Rai, Chairman, Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation informed that the Kite festival aimed to make Tarey Bhir a major tourist destination.Further he informed that Ujjwal Saha, President, Kite Society of Ahemadabad will be the judge in the competition which will have cash prizes to the winners.Chief Minister Pawan Chamling will be present in the occasion as the chief guest.Milan Gurung, President, Kite festival organising committee stated that many artists will also perform along with helicopter joyride.
This event was also held in the past but after a gap of many years when queried about the inconsistency the organizers stated that due to entire Tarey Bhir stretch falling under forest land such programs could not be held. They further informed that the Tarey bhir will further see more growth with paragliding being developed along with eco friendly accommodations. Tarey bhir is one of the most beautiful view points in Sikkim with mesmerizing views of surrounding mountains in South, West and East Sikkim along with neighboring Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal.
State government in the past has given many grants and funding to develop the beautiful area into a tourist hub however some bureaucratic and other logistical hurdles have made the progress slightly slow. The enormous potential of Tarey Bhir is slowly being recognized by all stakeholders with Kite festival being one of such initiatives from the local level.
