Sikkim Strength Lifting Association [SSLA] has felicitated strength lifters from Sikkim for their outstanding performance in the recently held 7th International Strength Lifting & Incline Bench Press Championship 2019 from 17 to 20 January at Karmazari, Pench in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. Eleven Sikkimese lifters were the part of 98-member India team in this prestigious international championship held in India this year.
In the championship, Sikkimese lifters have bagged 21 medals included 10 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals for the country. Likewise, Edu Tshering Bhutia has set a world record in the women’s inclined bench press by lifted the weight of 75.5 kgs and Pema Dorjee Bhutia also set a world record in master’s inclined bench press by lifted the weight of 135.5 kgs.
In the championship, three women strength lifters from Sikkim, Edu Tshering Bhutia, RanjuSundas and Kalpana Chettri bagged two gold medals each for the country, while PemaDorjee Bhutia also bagged two gold medals, Thinley Wangdi Bhutia won 1 gold medal and 1 silver medal, HomnathSiwakoti clinched 1 gold medal and 1 bronze medal, Ganesh Kumar Subba won 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal, Ongdup Tamang bagged 2 silver medals, Palden Tamang won 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal, Santosh Gupta won 2 bronze medals and Pempa Tamang won 1 bronze medal for India.
In his report, SSLA chief coach and international strength lifter, PemaDorjee Bhutia informed that 209 lifters from 10 countries have participated in the tournament. He informed that the competition was really tough and India team has won the team championship. “All lifters from Sikkim have gave an outstanding performance in the champion and it was a proud moment for us to win 21 medals for the country,” he expressed.
While congratulating international lifters from Sikkim for their outstanding performance, SSLA president TD Denzongpa stated that Sikkimese lifters have been doing well in the national and international levels in a short span of time by continuously winning medals for India and Sikkim. He informed that strength lifting was introduced in Sikkim in year 2013 and in a short time the State has already produced lots of international and national lifters.
Mr Denzongpa mentioned to take this sport to all corners of the State to bring out more strength lifters from Sikkim in the national and international levels. He stated that association would conduct the state championship shortly and will send teams in the upcoming national and international competitions.
