Mevedir in collaboration with the Horticulture Department jointly organized a day long GPU level Farmers training on Buckwheat cultivation package of practices and various other horticulture crops at Anden ward under Upper Thambong GPU, West Sikkim. The program was graced by the presence of Smt. Dawa Lhamu Sherpa (Ward Panchayat), Shri L.B. Gurung (VLW) along with Mevedir Master Trainer Mr. Rupen Tamang & Mangal Moti Subba.
In the opening session Shri L.B. Gurung highlighted the package of practice of buckwheat to the farmers and what were some of the important issues that yhe farmers had to be aware of. He informed that the seed input was being distributed as part of the ongoing departmental program. He also informed the farmers that before sowing the seeds, the preparation of field should be done in a proper manner with application of farm yard manure as per requirement. The farmers were also informed about the benefits of buckwheat and how this crop was being promoted under the Mission Organic Value Chain development program,
In the subsequent session Mr. Rupen Tamang Field Supervisor Sombaria Circle from Mevedir highlighted about the importance of growing horticultural crop in hilly area like vegetables, fruits, spices as well as medicinal plants etc. The farmers were informed about the olericulture for vegetables, pomology for fruits and floriculture for cultivation of flowers etc. He also gave some of the valuable information on cultivation of cole crops, root and bulb crops. Cole crops include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, mustard, turnips, and radishes. They are known for their nutritional benefits because they are high in carotenoids, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, magnesium, and dietary fiber. Meanwhile he also shared his knowledge about leafy, legume and solanaceous vegetables and also gave the proper cultivation details of spinach, pea, beans and some others crop like brinjal, tomato etc.
Before concluding the buckwheat seeds were distributed to the registered farmers in the ICS program and those who attended this days training session under the supervision of Ward Panchayat Smt. Dawa Lhamu Sherpa. More than forty farmers attended the training program. The vote of thanks for the training was given by the Mevedir Field Officers Ms. Mangal Moti Subba and the training was concluded for the day.
