Inspired by the Prime Minister’s impetus on Jal Sanchay, the Government launched a pan-Indian campaign— the “Jal Shakti Abhiyan” — targeting water-stressed areas for stocktaking and conservation initiatives. The Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) is a time-bound, mission-mode water conservation campaign. The JSA will run in two Phases: Phase 1 from 1st July to 15th September 2019 for all States and Union Territories; and Phase 2 from 1st October to 30th November for States and UTs receiving the retreating monsoon (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu)
The aim of the programme is to increase the water table in the water stressed areas through dams, ponds, afforestation. The campaign will also involve cleaning up of water bodies, specially the old and neglected ones. In order to make it a public movement, a team of officials from the centre to the local level will head to water-stressed areas to involve the local community, students to drive the campaign.
During the campaign, senior officers, groundwater experts and scientists from the Government of India will work together with State and District officials in India’s most water-stressed districts. JSA aims at making water conservation and promotion of irrigation efficiency a Jan-Andolan through asset creation and communication campaigns.
Under this campaign, targeted activities shall be undertaken under 5 areas of intervention namely,
(i) Water conservation and rainwater harvesting,
(ii) Renovation of traditional water bodies/tanks,
(iii)Reuse, borewell recharge structures,
(iv) Watershed development, and
(v) Intensive afforestation.
Rural Management & Development Department is the nodal Department for the implementation of Jal Shakti Abhiyan in the State. In the State of Sikkim,South District with its eight blocks has been identified for the implementation of JSA. In connection with the implementation of the JSA, a meeting under the Chairmanship of Secretary /RMDD was held today in the Conference hall of RMDD. In the meeting one senior level officer each was assigned to the eight blocks who will be responsible for co-ordinating with the block level officials in the implementation of the JSA. Further, line Departments have been identified for the implementation of the JSA and a meeting of the concerned Departments is scheduled to be held on 5th July 2019 to discuss issues and draw an Action Plan for the successful
implementation of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.
