Stars of Hope is a Gangtok based social organisation, and is presently working towards the concept of “Zero Waste Village” and “TB Free Village”, a new initiative of the organisation.
Taking this vision a step further, on 29th and 30th of June 2019, a two days long sensitization cum training session was organized by Kokaley, a village in East Sikkim, in collaboration with Stars Of Hope as a part of the vision of making the village “A Zero Waste Village” and “Elimination of TB from the village”.
In the said event, ward Panchayat, a total of 11 SHGS, NGOs, Teachers, Students, Youths and more than 100 residents had actively participated.
In the event Bikash Thapa, Founder-Chairman of Stars Of Hope was the main speaker who addressed the gathering on how the village can go about making Kokaley, a Zero Waste Village and Elimination of TB from the Village.
On the first day of the event, he gave a talk on the waste as a serious problem and importance of waste management. On the second half of the talk, sensitization regarding signs and symptoms of TB, preventive measures and the role of diet was given.
In the second day of the event, a talk on the practical approach towards achieving the vision and to the problem of waste and various plans needed to eliminate TB from the village was presented.
A resource recovery centre for the village was decided to be set up where all the reduced wastes from the village households will be collected and properly segregated for further reuse or recycle.
As a first step towards achieving the vision, on 6th and 7th of July 2019 a survey of the whole Kokaley village will be conducted in order to gather data on the present health status of each and every individuals of the village and also data on waste generation and management of each household with the help of the Youths and Students of the village.
Proper analysis of the data so collected will be done and the data will be used in future.
Moreover, various speakers including Teachers, Students and Youths from the village also addressed and urged everyone from the village to come together and support the vision in all the ways possible.
In the event, Mr. Ram Singh Rai, Secretary General of Stars Of Hope presented a presentation on the various works of Stars Of Hope being under taken across various fields and also shared the vision of Stars Of Hope on Kokaley.
Ward panchayat Mr. Harihar Guragain was present as the chief guest and in his address he talked on Environment and Health, and appreciating the vision assured to support it in all ways possible.
The NGO has thanked Dr. Nirmal Gurung, Assistant Program Office, state TB cell for the support all through the event.
Further, NGO, Stars of Hope have also thanked all the SHGs and all the individual of Kokaley who came forward to support and contribute in the event.
