Another home team, Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club (SHSC) has also secured its berth in the semi-final round of the ongoing 39th All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2019 here at Paljor Stadium. In neck-to-neck played third quarter-final match on Thursday, Sikkim Himalayan SC has edged past Gokulam Football Club, Kerala 3-2 to enter into semi-final round of the tournament.
Both teams took each other neck-to-neck with an attacking game from the start of the match. Both teams launched some good attacks but could not able to net any goal and the first half was seems to be ended goalless until Lalrinzuala Hauhnar scored the lead for Gokulam FC in the 41st minute. However, with a good come back Uttam Rai scored the equaliser for the home team immediately in the 43rd minute to finish the first half 1-1 draw.
In the early minutes of the second half, Lalliansanga took the lead of Gokulam FC to 2-1 in the 49th minute but could not able to maintain the lead for long when Eugene Nimako scored the equaliser for the home team in the 57th minute.
When players of both teams were playing hard to take the lead in the match with constant attacks and counter-attacks, Uttam Rai completed his brace in the 64th minute to take the lead of Sikkim Himalayan SC to 3-2. In return, Gokulam FC players played their hearts out but could not able to score any further goal in the match and with the final whistle the home team entered into the semi-final round of the tournament.
However, on the final whistle by the referee, a section of spectators in the stadium and Gokulam team members shown their dissatisfaction when the game timing maintained by the referees and time on the electronic scoreboard in the stadium did not match.
Speaking on the same to media after the match, the match commissioner explained that the electronic scoreboard was running late more than seven minutes but it is actually the game was running and should be running with the watch of all four officials in the match. He stated that the electronic scoreboard was for spectators but the match should run according to watches of referees. He informed that two minutes extra time given in the first half and another five minutes was added after 90 minutes of the game.
The last quarter-final match will be played between Army Red and Kolkata’s giant, Mohammedan Sporting Club under floodlights on Friday evening.
