Mercury dipped in West Sikkim as many high altitude areas of Western region witnessed heavy to moderate snowfall in the last 12 hours. Several hilly high altitudes were draped in white after the snowfall.
It was reported that high altitude places of Indo – Nepal border such as Cheewa Bhanjyang, Phoktey, Kalijhar, Torifuley, Achaley received massive snowfall on Thursday and Friday. Similarly, the famed tourism places of West Sikkim -Okhrey, Barsey, Hiley, Ribdi, and Bharyang which falls under Kanchanjunga National Park were covered in thick snow due to continuous snowfall since last night. Torrential rainfall of Saturday in various parts of West Sikkim has also contributed to extreme fall in temperature and the weather condition even in the low lying areas like Legship, Reshi and Jorethang were informed to be acutely cold.
Houses of the people and roads at Hiley and Barsey were found blanketed in a thick cover of snow and the weather was unpleasantly cold.
A person from Okhrey informed that the fresh snowfall in Okhrey and other adjoining areas has affected a drastic change in weather and mercury has plunged down severely turning the places extremely chilly. In the context of tourism, he shared that it was an offseason and despite heavy snowfall in many tourist hotspots of Barsey range, apart from local tourist the presence of visitors from outside the state were very thin. However, he expressed that the inflow of local visitors is expected to be increased if snowfall continues in the region.
