Gangtok Times Report
GANGTOK, Dec 14
Sikkim Republican Party [SRP] has claimed that if the State government has the political will then it can save the people of Sikkim from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. He stated that the State government can bring the Inner Line Permit system by requesting the Centre to provide protection to the people of Sikkim.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, SRP president, KB Rai claimed that after being passed by both houses of the Parliament and with the President’s assent the CAA has now became an Act and would be implemented in throughout the State including Sikkim. He asserted that the CAB would be implemented in all those States which have not been exempted and the State government cannot able to stop it. However, he stated that if the State government has the political will then it can provide the protection to the people of Sikkim by bringing in the IPL in the State.
Mr Rai stated that the people of Sikkim can be protected if the left-out communities of the State have been provided with the tribal status. He further suggested that even by using the clause (f) of the Article 371F the protection can be provided to Sikkimese people. He mentioned that the clause (f) of the Article 371F still has the provision to reserve seats in the State Assembly on the basis of community, which was taken out in the year 1979. On the same, he stated that it was the high time to restore this clause once again in the State by requesting the Centre.
Mr. Rai stated that if the government wants to save Sikkimese people from the influx after the implementation of the CAA then it should take these steps. He mentioned that there would be direct interference on the political rights of Sikkimese people after the increase in the influx and the people of Sikkim would become the minority in their own State and the majority of communities would affect in a big manner.
