Chief minister P.S Golay on Sunday attended two days Baharimijung festival, a traditional festival of Mangar community organized by Akhil Sikkim Mangar Sangh (ASMS) at Mangarjung, Mangsari of West Sikkim. The festival was also attended by power minister M.N Sherpa, agriculture minister Loknath Sharma, PHE minster Bhim Hang Subba, area MLA Aditya Goley, government officials and others.
At the outset the president of ASMS, Santosh Aley presenting a brief history of Baharimijong informed that Mangar community observe Baharimijung offer prayers to community’s dieties in a religious way for the progress, peace and prosperity of Mangar community. He maintained that Baharimijung is one of the ancient cultural and religious practices followed by Mangar community.
Santosh Aley on behalf of Mangar community also placed various demands in relation to Mangar community such as granting tribal status to Mangar community, making provision of political representative from Mangar community, infrastructural development of Mangarjung project of Mangsari and disbursement of fund the project, construction of Mangar Bhawan in Namchi, South Sikkim, early completion of under construction Mangar Bhawan of Gangtok, renovation of Mangar traditional hut and construction of a research centre at Soldung, regularization of ad – hoc Mangar language teachers and others.
Chief minister P.S Golay in his address assured that the state government would consider all the demands placed by Mangar community. He maintained that SKM government was working with central government for inclusion of 11 left out communities including Mangar in the tribal category. He asserted that the state government would sanction budget for incomplete Magarjung project of Mangsari in two phase after 2020 – 21 budget session. It may be mentioned her that Magarjung project was sanctioned and started by the former SDF government but it was reported that the pace of project construction process is very slow due to lack of funds.
On the demand of appointment of political representative from Mangar community, P.S Goley stated that SKM party could not field anybody from Mangar community in the election as there were lack of support of the community to SKM. However he asserted that political representative from mangar community would be appointed very soon. “Give us your desired representative we will appoint not one but two political representatives from Mangar community”, he said.
Chief Minister P.S Golay expressed that Baharimijung was a sacred and ancient festival of Mangar community and added that preservation of age old cultural heritage in the form of traditions, culture and customs was important to keep alive the distinct identities of various communities. He reiterated that SKM government has restored a secular environment in the state where all the communities are independent to follow and practice their religions and cultures and unlike under the former SDF government, SKM government does not blend politics in the communities based programmes.
Political interference in cultural and religious events must cease. SKM believes in democratic values and each and every communities should be left to work independently for their progress, he said, adding that SKM government would work for protection and preservation of cultural identities of all the communities of the state.
On the demands of Soreng – Chyakhung constituency to be established as a district and construction of a hospital in Soreng having a better medical facilities, chief minister P.S Golay expressed that Soreng – Chyakhung constituency could be established as a district considering growing population, aspirations of the people and the state government is working to that purpose. He informed that the new land for the construction of a hospital in Soreng was considered as the place where the hospital at a present location was in a cold place.
He further informed that Soreng for the first time would host the state level tourism festival and promised further development of the constituency.
Golay also deliberated on various developmental programmes of the state and maintained that promises made to the people would be fulfilled one by one. He informed that under housing scheme – Sikkim Garib Awaash Yojana, 100 houses in each constituency of the state would be constructed and the state government has kept aside fund to initiate the scheme. He said that SKM government is working diligently to accelerate the development of various sectors. On health sector, Golay reminded that state government was committed to improve the health based services in the state. He said that medical assistant to the needy people was being provided by the state government. He raised his concern over rising rate of cancer in the state and informed that a team of researchers have been formed to study the cancer related cases in the state.
He urged the people to have patience with just 7 months old SKM government and promised a greater greater development of Sikkim in coming future.
Chief minister P.S Golay along with other eminent personalities from Mangar community were felicitated by the organizing committee.
