The Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department, (SJE & WD) Govt of Sikkim organized a day long an Awareness Programme on Scholarship Scheme for North District here at the conference hall of North District Zilla Panchayat, Bhawan today.
The Programme was attended by District Collector, North, RinzingChewang Bhutia, who was accompanied by Additional Secretary, Benu Gurung, (SJE & WD), Joint Director, Norden Lepcha, SJE & WD, Deputy Secretary, Tshering Dorjee Bhutia, District Child Protection Officer, North, Smt. Wendy Lepcha and Welfare Inspector from the district. The programme also had the presence of Panchayats, School Heads, Teachers and officers from different departments.
Additional Secretary, Smt. Gurung in her address, she informed that the main purpose of the programme was to sensitize and disseminate the various provision of the scholarship such as Post Matric scholarship to ST, SC and Central OBC students, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Post Matric Scholarship to EBC (State OBC) students, Pre Matric Scholarship to ST, SC, OBC and Minority students, Post Matric scholarship to Minority students, Merit-cum-means based scholarship to Minority Students, National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST students (formally Top Class Education for ST students), Pre Matric Scholarship for students with disabilities, Post Matric Scholarship for students with disabilities and Scholarship for Top Class Education for students with disabilities.
Smt. Gurung mentioned that the scholarship scheme also included children whose parents belonged to unclean occupation such as rag pickers. Children from this community are exempted from providing the Certification of Identification.
It was also revealed that only fourteen students from the district were enjoying scholarship. She urged the District school administrators to do their best to make sure that the students can avail the above mentioned scholarship who are eligible. She further said that she wanted all the 77 schools in the district under scholarship scheme in the future.
She further informed that the students those who are eligible can now register online through state portal: www.sikkim.gov.in and www.scholarship.gov.in. Students who belong to SC and OBC category (Class I to X) can register through a manual form.
The DC/N, Shri Bhutia, said that the statistics of the students receiving scholarship were disheartening and unacceptable. He directed the Panchayats, Teachers and Headmasters to put some effort in changing the figures. He invited the school to approach his office after collecting the data to upload the information if they faced connectivity issue. He encouraged the schools to lend their assistance to make sure the students get the scholarship which is being provided the State and the Central Govt.
During the programme, eight students from the district received sponsorship from ‘Sponsorship and Foster Care Fund’ (S&FCF) from the hands of the DC/N. The S&FCF was sponsored by District Child Protection Unit, North under Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS), SJE & WD, Govt. of Sikkim.
