A Week long National Girl Child Day Celebration was held at different ICDS centres under Chungthang Tribal Project (ICDS) with theme of “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow”. The week long programme which was commenced from 21 January includes awareness events on health and hygiene, door-to-door campaign by Anganwadi and Asha workers on girl child development, review of the achievements and targets of the BBBP Scheme, and discussions with stakeholders. Rallies, signature campaigns, self-defence training programmes for students, painting and poster-making competitions among others, tree plantations, felicitation of parents of girl children and distribution of birth certificates were part of the activities.
The programme had conducted under the aegis of CDPO Chungthang, Ms
Sonam Laden Lachungpa.Awareness on POCSO about good touch and bad touch was also sensitized during the programme. All the activities from Day 1 ie 21st Jan to 25th Jan has been undertaken by Block Task Force Chungthang .
It may be mentioined here that the National girl child day is celebrated every year on 24th of January as a national observance day for the girl child. This celebration was started to offer more supports and new opportunities to the girls in the country. It is celebrated to increase the awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society. Inequality about girl child is a vast problem which includes many areas like inequality in education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, protection,honour, child marriage and so many.
