The 38th National Arm Wrestling Championship kicked off here at auditorium of Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Geyzing. The two day championship is organized by All Sikkim Arm Wrestling Association of India (ASAWA) under the aegis of Arm Wrestling Federation of India (AWFI). It is for the time the state of Sikkim is hosting the national level arm wrestling championship.
The inaugural day of the championship was attended by D.B Gurung chairman of State Bank of Sikkim as chief guest. D.C (West) Karma R. Bonpo, President of AWFI A.R Shankar Bhagawati, vice president Ganesh Subba, president of ASAWA LhendupDorjee Bhutia, SKM party’s youth coordinator and others were also present at the event.
A large numbers of participants from the states of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Kerela and the host state Sikkim are competing against each other in the championship. The champioship in various category of arm wrestling was organized today.
Sikkim has fared poorly in the championship and the state has not been able to win even a single match so far.
President of ASAWA, LhendupDorjee Bhutia on the sikkimese arm wrestlers’ poor performance in the championship expressed that arm wrestling is in nascent stage in Sikkim and there is need of development of technic and knowlege amongst the sikkimese participants about the game. However he maintained that the ongoing national level championship held in the state could be a turning point for the eager arm wrestlers of Sikkim who want to know more about arm wrestling technics.
“It is good to see the sikkimese arm wrestler who are new to arm wrestling giving a tough competition to already established and skilled arm wrestlers from other states. I assume that Sikkim has a bright future in arm wrestling in near future”, he said.
Bhutia informed that ASAWA is playing an active role to promote and popularize arm wrestling in Sikkim and the objective of organizing the national level arm wrestling championship in Sikkim is part of promoting arm wrestling in Sikkim. He added that ASAWA wants to involve more numbers of youth in arm wrestling through creation of necessary platform for the youth.
President of AWFI, E.R PrahladSankarBahagawati in his brief address appreciated the effort of ASAWA for promotion of arm wrestling in the state of Sikkim. He said popularity of arm wrestling in the world sporting arena is growing up gradually and people of Sikkim are taking up arm wrestling keenly as a beneficial sporting activity. Describing the future of Sikkim as bright in arm wrestling, Bhagawati praised the interests shown by the sikkimese arm wrestling and the effort being put up by the state for promotion of the sport. “Popularity of arm wrestling is growing up in Sikkim. We just need involvement of more numbers of youth for development and promotion of arm wrestling in the state”, he said.
He maintained that sporting activities play a constructive role for formation of strong, disciplined and moral society. He maintained that making the youth part of sports based activities for healthy living has become a necessary of the time.
It was reported that the final matches of the championship will be played on Tuesday.
