In an effort to enhance agricultural productivity under the Central Government’s New India Movement which is underway in the district with technical support from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Mangan North Sikkim.
The initiative aims at doubling farmer’s income by 2022 and has identified seven sources of income growth namely, improvement in crop productivity; improvement in livestock productivity; resource use efficiency or savings in the cost of production; increase in the cropping intensity; diversification towards high value crops; improvement in real prices received by farmers; and shift from farm to non-farm occupations.
The KVK today held technology demonstration and awareness programme on Ultra High Density planting of maize for the farmers of Malling and Ringhim villages at KVK farm in Mangan, North Sikkim. The Malling and Ringhim villages have been identified as pilot project of this programme. The farmers from Pakyong East Sikkim were also attended the programme.
The Project Coordinator KVK, TT Bhutia, highlighted about ultra high density on maize through high yielding technology of farming. He further sensitised that farming of maize cultivation under high density is as same as traditional farming but the farmers need to sow two to three seeds together in one go and later rest of the plants should weed out letting two plants to grow.
The project coordinator also imparted the information through power point presentation like farming of Quineo.
The farmers were also made field visit at KVK farm where high density planting of maize are cultivated.
The meeting was attended by the farmers, Panchayats and Zilla members and the officials.
