Bharatiya Janata Party, Sikkim Unit President D.B. Chauhan and DT Lepcha, MLA, Gnathang-Machhong Constituency called on Sikkim State Election Commissioner Nima L. Ethenpa today. The main purpose of the meeting was to attract the attention of the State Election Commission, especially on the process to fill up the post of Zilla Panchayat Adhyaksha in South Sikkim which is lying vacant since recent Assembly Election, 2019.
Farwanti Tamang, the then Zilla Panchayat Adhyaksha of South Sikkim had resigned from the post to contest in Sikkim Legislative Assembly Election in April, 2019. In order to fulfill this post, information has been received from the south that 25 Zilla Panchayat members of the south district who have passed the proposal and nominated Farmit Lepcha as Adhyaksha. However, since the subject of the matter is legally related to the State Election Commission, the Bharatiya Janata Party today put the matter before the State Election Commissioner. The Commission was informed about the delaying in the electoral process by administration to fulfill this post so that the social and economic development of rural area could not be interrupted.
Speaking on the issue laid by the party, Commissioner Nima L. Ethenpa said that the Election Commission has taken cognizance of this matter under Section 103 of the Sikkim Panchayat Act, 1993 and issued directives to the District Collector of South Sikkim to complete the electoral process very soon. The State Election Commission has nominated DC, South as Presiding Officer and said to complete the electoral process of Mellidara-Turuk Territorial Constituency and fill up the post of Zilla Panchayat Adhyaksha.
