If CAA is implemented in Sikkim BL community could go down to 5% from 45% : Bhutia

Hamro Sikkim Party working president, Bhaichung Bhutia requested the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah to name Pakyong Airport after Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal who has given the Article 371F to Sikkim and its people. He placed this issue along with other issues of the State to the Home Minister during a meeting in Delhi on Saturday. A press release informed that the Union Home Minister gave a patience hearing all issues of Sikkim including the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill placed during the meeting.
The release informed that the issues raised during the meeting were the exemption for Sikkim from CAA has not been mentioned in written. He also informed the Minister that during the merger to India in 1975 the population ratio of BL community [Lepcha, Bhutia, Sherpa etc] was just 45% and if CAA was implemented BL community could go down to 5% or below. “This is serious danger of losing our identity, culture and language and to safeguard all the Sikkimese origin people [Lepcha, Bhutia, Nepali and old business community) the re-verification of Sikkim subject and COI to be implemented in place of NRC,” he said.
The release informed that the Home Minister was very positive in his response and said to consider and look into demands. It is added that the Home Minister stated that the Article 371f was not included since it was anyway powerful then the act or the bill and he had also consulted all the legal experts on article 371f and so therefore it was not necessary to put in the bill.
“We also agreed that I would put down in writing all our concerns and demands and form a small committee that could suggest the safeguards of Sikkimese interest and get back to the Minister,” it is added.
