Protest, rallies have become frequent in Sikkim these days. Not only the political parties but it seems that public has also sounded the poll bugle.
Most of the protest are genuine and logical but some opportunists mind have taken it as a chance to denigrate government ahead of election.
These days most popular chants we are hearing is “Election audaichaetibelanai ho chance”.
Pressure is building on the Government to swiftly address the plight of protesters who are demanding many things some are genuine and someof them are brain child of an opportunists.
During elections government is widely believed to be adversely pressurized with baseless allegations.
This year elections barely a couple of month away, it is an alarming case in point for the state that consecutive protest were seen in the state capital.
The very quality of democratic consolidation is at stake considering that some political parties are screaming at being arm-twisted within the electoral process and some protestors groups are crying foul.
Considering that opposition perceptions are critical in influencing public opinion, and competing narratives amidst rising political temperatures by snipping away misinformation and conspiracy theories and providing the necessary information and analysis that helps people form informed opinions to make electoral choices.
In a hostile environment like this, how should the government perform its professional remit of being the guardian of public interest in the thick of an election?
A government that has served people for 24 years deserve some amount of respect. Don’t they? In the last twenty four years of the SDF reign, Sikkim has transformed immensely and rapidly developed in every sector . The environment of peace and security which the people have witnessed and experienced for the last two decades and more stands as the living example. As citizens of the state one must not forget that such positive results have happened on its own but it is because of the experienced leadership and the better principles, programs and policies of government.
Pressuring government during the election is risking the quality of our democracy. As a citizens we need to be responsible and should be able to distinguish between right policies and opportunists mind.
