PwDs in Sikkim are given equal opportunities, and valued for their skills and abilities: Ghatani

“Empowering Person with Disability and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality” themed International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) was observed today at Central Referral Hospital, Manipal.
Minister for Health Care, Human Services & Family Welfare Department, A.K Ghatani graced the occasion as the chief guest.
The programme was organized by Sikkim ViklangSahayataSamiti (SVSS) and Central Referral Hospital in association with Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department. According to the United Nations, the theme of 2018 focuses on empowering persons with disability with equal opportunities and inclusiveness. The idea is to empower them with equitable, inclusive and sustainable development as part of Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.
Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Minister, Shri A. K Ghatani said, “The day (December 3) is meant to promote rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of development in the society. The main idea is to raise awareness about Persons with Disabilities, their situation and their means to survive in cultural, economic, social and political life. On this day, it is important to spread awareness by involving organizations and individuals in breaking down attitudinal and structural barriers for people with disability.”
Referring to various central and state sponsored social welfare schemes, e Minister urged children to take advantage of it under Social Welfare Department. He urged the Social Welfare Department to launch a campaign by involving ASHA, CDPOs to identify such students, to award them such welfare schemes and also for making Disability Certificates etc. Minister urged everyone to carry out a survey to identify PwDs in the state so that they can avail various welfare schemes.
Ghatani stated that Sikkim is committed to support Person with Disabilities to fully participate in their communities by ensuring equal access to all aspects of public life and empowering people with disabilities to be contributors, and decision makers. He further added that in Sikkim, PwDs are given equal opportunities, and valued for their skills and abilities.
“We have to create a healthy society by extending support to People with Disabilities at the right time not only for people with disabilities, but society as a whole.” Minister added.
Minister appealed to everyone to come forward and work united and unanimous to make Sikkim free Tuberculosis state by 2022. He also briefed about the upcoming 1000 bedded Multi Speciality Hospital at Sichey.
On the occasion, Dr. SatyaSaraswat (Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon), Saraswat Hospital Agra was also felicitated by organizers for his noble cause like conducting post burnt surgery etc.
Earlier, Additional Secretary, Shri K. B. Pradhan, Smt. Roshni Rai, Project Director of SamagraShiksha, Shri Bhim Thatal also addressed the gathering.
The organizers also conducted free cleft lip, palate and post burnt screening camp at CRH where 60 persons were screened and among 60, 33 persons were admitted for surgery.
The programme was attended by Additional Secretary of Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department, K. B. Pradhan, Additional Secretary, Roshni Rai, Project Director of Human Resource Development Department, SamagraShiksha, Bhim Thatal, Principal Director, Heath Department, Dr. NimDorjee Bhutia, and other dignitaries.
