Technology and Machinery Demonstration Mela-2019 was organized by All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) centers of Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture (ESA), Farm Implements and Machinery (FIM) Plasticulture Engineering Technology (PET), and Utilization of Animal Energy (UAE) operating in the College of Agricultural Engineering and Post Harvest Technology, Ranipool on 15th Feb 2019. The programme was chaired by Prof. P.P. Dabral, Dean CAEPHT. In his address, Prof. Dabral explained the research and extension activities being undertaken by different departments of the college. He also informed the farmers that College has planned to organize 5 skill development trainings different topics related to overall development of the farmers. He requested the farmers to send the school drop outs and other unemployed youth to enhance the skill.
Prinicpal Investigators (PI) of all AICR projects addressed the house. In his address, Dr. SK Satpathy, PI, AICRP on FIM, briefed the technologies and equipment, suitable for hill agriculture, developed at the centre. Dr. Deepak Jhajharia, PI of AICRP on PET highlighted the extension activities related to the construction of three naturally-ventilated low-cost bamboo poly-houses and two plastic-lined dug-out pond (02 Nos in Nessa Tashiding) carried. Er. SK Chauhan, PI, AICRP on UAE explained the working of all the need base developed animal drawn equipment and display to the farmers. He reiterated to the farmers to adopt the animal drawn improved equipment package and urged them to share the knowhow when required from the UAE centre of the college.
The event was coordinated by Dr. NS Chauhan, Professor and Principal Investigator of CAEPHT centre of AICRP on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture. Dr. Chauhan stressed the need for farm mechanization in Sikkim keeping in view the labour scarcity in the region due to implementation of number of employment related Government. He also briefed the house about the activities and relevance of ergonomics in design and utilization of farm machinery. It was also informed that the programme is being organized by all Universities and other Institutes where AICRPs are operational. Total 200 farmers from all districts of the state participated in the progamme.
During the programme, three video films on (a) demonstration of various tools, implements and machinery (b) use of plastics in Agriculture and (c) post harvest processing of ginger and other products were shown to the farmers during the programme. Farm machinery suitable for hill agriculture in Sikkim like mini tractor, light weight power tillers with different attachments like cultivator, multi-crop seed drill, puddler and potato digger, bullock-drawn implement such as wedge plough, single row and two row animal drawn planter, Bio-fertilizer cum maize planter, multi-functional animal drawn unit, manually operated ergonomically designed hand tools and other devices (i.e. Large cardamom harvesting knife, improved ladder for harvesting of oranges and pears, manually operated threshers, chaff cutter with safety devices and winnowers), small engine operated equipment and light weight rice thresher were displayed and demonstrated during the mela. Use of solar energy through various gadgets were also displayed for the benefit of the farmers.
