A week long golden jubilee celebration commenced here at government secondary school of Sopakha under Maneybung Dentam constituency. The first day of commemorative event was attended by MLA Chandra Maya Subba as chief guest. Headmaster of the school T.R Chettri, principal of Uttarey Senior Secondary School B.S Limboo, dignitaries, school staffs and students were also present in the programme.
At the outset, headmaster of the school T.R Chettri presented a brief school annual report. He shared that Sopakha Secondary School was established in 1968 by some persons of Sopakha considering the educational need of local people. He stated that since its establishment, the school has been in service to the education sector of Sikkim and has been able to produce efficient human resource. He informed that school has done well both in academic and other activities. “Effort is being made to make the school a centre of holistic education. Ensuring quality education for students is our objective”, he said.
Chandra Maya Subba in her address congratulated the school fraternity on attainment of 50 years of continuous service to the education sector of the state. She expressed that Sopakha Secondary School has served the education sector and the society well since 50 years. She said that education sector in Sikkim has seen rapid transformation due to effective educational policies initiated by the state government under the leadership of chief minister Pawan Chamling. Claiming that the state government spends 20% of budget for development of education sector, Chandra Maya Subba added that topmost priority has been given to education sector. She further expressed that free education policy conceived and started by the state government has ensured easy access to education for the Sikkimese people irrespective of class and creed. “All the credit goes to state government for flourishing education sector as It is due to good governance the sector has received commendable transformations. The priority given by the state government to education sector of the state has paid off well and it is evident from the fact that Sikkim does not have to rely upon the human resource from outside the state anymore”, she said.
She also informed about other developmental schemes and achievements of the state government led by chief minister Pawan Chamling.
The main attraction of the celebratory event today was football match played under Golden Jubilee Celebratory Football Tournament. Sopakha Secondary School emerged victorious in the match played today by defeating Sukraj FC by 6 to 4 goals.
Cultural programme was other extravaganzas of the programme. The school magazine titled ‘Golden Dreams’ was also released today.
