An awareness programme on Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and Voter Verifiable Audit Trail (VVPAT) under Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participations (SWEEP) for the representatives of political parties, Media and members of various NGOs was organized by the nodal officers (west district) today here at warehouse of the Election Commission of India, Kyongsa near Geyzing bazar.
The programme was attended by returning officer A.B Karki, ADC (west) K.L Lepcha, SDM (Geyzing) TusharNikharey and undersecretary (west district cell) of Sikkim Election Department Sonam Palmu Bhutia. The representatives of two major political parties of Sikkim, SKM and SDF were also presents along with people from different NGOs.
Demonstrating the efficiency of EVM and VVPAT, Tshering Palmu Bhutia awared the gatherings about the ways EVM and VVPAT work. She expressed that with
the VVPAT in use during polling, a voter who has cast his/her ballot in an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) will also be able to see on the screen of the VVPAT machine a printed copy containing the serial number, name and symbol of the candidate he has voted for. She added that the ballot slip will be visible for seven seconds and after which the slip will drop in the printer’s drop box to be stored. ‘Hands on demo’ was also presented to create awareness among political parties representatives and other participants trying out the VVPAT machines. Mock votes were also cast to showcase the efficiency of EVM and VVPAT. Bhutia shared that if the machines show technical faults during polling, they would be replaced with new machines immediately.
Returning officer A.B Karki informed that ‘Hands on Demo’ would be carried out in the village level and market places as well to boost voters’ confidence and clear the air on misconceptions regarding EVM and VVPAT. “Making people familiar with electronic voting machines is our objective. Our effort would be to ensure polling in transparent and democratic way”, he added.
He expressed his disappointment over non representation of other political parties of the state (apart from SKM and SDF) those had given the programme a miss despite being invited in the programme.
